(KMOV.com) - A St. Louis man is behind bars after he allegedly left a high-caliber gun within reach of two infant children.

Heath Alan Cowin Jr, 19, was charged Monday with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and resisting arrest.

Police said they were called to a home at the 4700 block of South Grand Boulevard and found Cowin’s girlfriend screaming and claiming he was beating her.

Authorities said Cowin had run out the back door and tried hiding a loaded Colt Commander semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine in an infant’s bedroom.

"It was readily capable of lethal use, so all one child has to do who knows nothing about guns is touch that trigger, immediately someone could have been seriously injured or killed,” said Assistant St. Louis Circuit Attorney Brenna Kantrovitz. “It was right in arms reach of the children, within a couple feet of the children."

Cowin was later found by police hiding in a car. He is on probation for receiving stolen property, a charge he pleaded guilty to in May.
