(KMOV.com) – Two 15-year-olds and a 13-year-old are in custody after police say they carjacked a woman before leading officers on a chase in Fairview Heights Tuesday night.
According to police, the suspects approached a 38-year-old woman and her 7-year-old son who were getting into their car after shopping at the Dollar General on Lincoln Trail Heights around 9:07 p.m.
Police say the suspects pointed what looked like a handgun at the victim and demanded money. Before getting money, they ordered the woman and boy to get out of the car and drove away from the scene.
Officers later spotted the car travelling on St. Clair Ave. at Highway 157 and tried to pull them over, but the suspects refused to stop.
The chase continued into Washington Park and ended after the suspects lost control and crashed into a drainage ditch near Vassar and Hallows.
The suspects then got out of the car and fled on foot.
Police from several area agencies set up a perimeter and located the teens. They were taken to the Fairview Heights Police Department for treatment and are currently being held at the St. Clair County Juvenile Detention.
Authorities say they also recovered three airsoft guns – which resemble authentic firearms – at the scene.
According to police, one of the 15-year-old suspects was involved in a robbery at Moody Park on October 11. He was charged in juvenile court for that incident with robbery and mob action and was supposed to be on home confinement.
