(KMOV.com) -- Authorities have arrested a suspect who was relaxing on a couch near a man found dead in a Mascoutah home Monday night.
Authorities say Richard Feldt, 59, was found with multiple stab wounds after officers performed a well-being check at his home on E. Church St. around10:30 p.m. According to police, they were performing the check after relatives said they hadn’t seen him since last Thursday.
Police say when officers initially arrived they found his truck in the driveway, but no one would answer the front door.
Authorities say a friend of Feldt’s who had a key to the house let the officers in. That’s when they found Feldt’s body on the floor. According to police, he had been dead for “more than a day.”
Authorities say a 23-year-old man was found relaxing on the couch near Feldt’s body. He was taken into custody without incident.
Police say he had been staying with Feldt, who ran a small painting business, on and off for several months. They say most recently he had been living with Feldt for about two weeks and was helping with the business.
According to police, the suspect has a history of arrests and run-ins with the law, though none of the previous crimes were of a violent nature.
An autopsy was being performed Tuesday to determine a cause of death.
Police say they didn’t expect to apply for charges until sometime Wednesday. They say there are no other suspects in the case.
