(KMOV.com) – Police say a pair of teens were arrested after using a BB-gun-style rifle to fire shots at drivers on a Belleville road.

Belleville police said an officer on Tuesday was helping a driver whose car window had blown out when the officer’s patrol car was shot at.

“It was extremely scary for the officers responding, they didn’t know what kinds of threat they were facing. They did not know if it was a real gun or a BB gun,” Sergeant Mark Heffernan with Belleville police said.

Authorities said a St. Clair County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived on scene and the teens shot out his window too.

Officers said they began to search for the suspects and initially came up empty handed. However, police said they spoke to nearby residents who provided them with the information to track down and arrest the teens.

Authorities believe more BB guns are being used in violent crimes. Police said they will treat it as a serious threat.

“The BB guns look very similar to real firearms and that presents a grave danger to younger kids out roaming around in neighborhoods,” Heffernan said.
