(KMOV) –East St. Louis Police are investigating a shooting that left one Metro-East man dead on Thursday morning.

East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore said the victim, 34-year-old Derrick Wren, was sitting with friends in the 1700 block of Boismenue Ave. around 10:00 am when several suspects approached with handguns and opened fire.

Chief Floore said Wren suffered a fatal wound to the head and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The shooting occurred near the home of a friend not in Wren’s neighborhood.  Wren was a resident of East St. Louis, but did not have a street address.

Chief Floore said that it appeared Wren was targeted, but a motive is not yet known.

Police are questioning one person of interest in the case, but no arrests have been made.

There is speculation the homicide was a result of an attempted robbery.  However, authorities stress the investigation is still in its preliminary stages.
