(KMOV) – Four inmates face additional charges after authorities say they plotted to escape from the St. Clair County Jail.

Deangelo Wiley, 19, Devin Warren, 19, Daniel Brown, 34, and Joshua Baker, 27, were all charged Wednesday with attempted escape, a class 3 felony.

According to authorities, officers began investigating and conducting surveillance on June 7 after hearing rumors of a plotted escape.

Two days later authorities ordered a surprise search of the suspects’ cells after finding a damaged mop and used broom handles.

Authorities said that’s when they found a hole in one of the housing units about five to seven inches in diameter. According to officials, the hole had been punched through about an inch of concrete and wire meshing was exposed.

“The effort that went into creating the hole leaves no doubt that these inmates were serious about making an escape…” said Sheriff Richard Watson.

All four of the inmates were relocated to individual steel cells. Their bonds were set at $300,000 each.

Prior to the new charges, Warren was in custody for unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful distribution of a look-alike substance.

Wiley was serving out a sentence for murder while Brown and Baker were being held on multiple felony counts including weapons and drug charges.
