(KMOV) –A man is in police custody after he allegedly stalked two young siblings as they walked home from school then held them inside the basement of their Country Club Hills home on Tuesday.

Police say Dejai Caffey followed Calian, 8, and Ahyana Edwards, 10, home Tuesday afternoon and asked to use their phone. But when they said no, he got aggressive and forced his way into the house.

I was about to put my key in the door and I saw him in the street did I know where a phone is,” said Calian Edwards. “My mind was just blank I didn't know what to do.”

Caffey who was reportedly on probation for a previous burglary, pushed the kids downstairs into a basement.

“I was scared and me and my brother were crying,” said Ahyana.

Authorities say they were notified by a neighbor who saw everything. Calian was then able to break free and ran upstairs to meet officers.

“He was afraid his sister would be in harm’s way so he said I'm going to get my sister so we had to stop him,” said Lt. Wilkerson with the Country Club Hills Police Department.

Ahyana got away and police used a dog to subdue Caffey. He is now facing burglary and felony restraint charges.

Parents know that without the help of neighbors, things could have ended very badly.
