(KMOV) – A teenager has been arrested in the murder of an elderly man in south St. Louis. Police are now releasing information about the shocking motive behind the crime.
According to St. Louis police documents, the attackers were playing a game called “knock-out,” where a victim is picked at random and brutally beaten. It’s a vicious game that could make anyone the next victim.
Elex Murphy, 18, of St. Louis, has been charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of Hoang Nguyen, 72.
Police say Murphy approached Nguyen as he and his wife Yen were walking home. According to investigators, Murphy grabbed Nguyen by the jacket and began punching him in the head. Nguyen died from his injuries.
A security camera inside a grocery store captured video of Nguyen and his wife just five minutes before the brutal attack.
After buying their groceries, the couple walked out of the market and headed home, walking along an alley by Chippewa Avenue. That’s where they were attacked.
Nguyen’s wife was also injured in the attack, but she survived. Officials say this senseless game cost Nguyen his life.
Police are still looking for at least one more suspect in this case. They say they have good leads on the second attacker.
