ALTON, Ill. (KMOV.com) –A 19-year-old north St. Louis County woman is accused of killing her baby son while staying with an acquaintance in Alton, Illinois.

Wallisha Bland was charged Tuesday with two counts of first-degree murder.

According to police, Bland was staying with a friend at an apartment in the 3200 block of Belle Street when she threw her son, Jace Gillespie, on the floor.

Gillespie, who was nearly 2 months old, was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton. He was pronounced dead just after 10 a.m. Thursday.

Police initially thought Bland had rolled over Gillespie while sleeping. But charges came against Bland after an autopsy revealed a fracture to the infant’s skull.

Authorities said Bland was staying with someone she had met in the hospital before giving birth to Gillespie.

Bland also has a 16-month-old son. That child has been taken by family services.
