(KMOV.com) – A mother has been cited after police said she left her child alone in a car Sunday.
Police said the woman left her 3-week-old baby alone in her car for 45 minutes while she was inside shopping at Babies ‘R Us in Chesterfield. Police said another customer later found the baby in the car with the air conditioner running.
“In this particular case an infant being left alone in a vehicle for what we believe is an extended period of time is a concern,” said Captain Steven Lewis with Chesterfield police.
Police told News 4 they are concerned that a child who is left alone in a car could be a target for a criminal to do further harm.
"To leave your child of a minor age in any kind of condition or circumstances which may lead to their harm, being unattended in a vehicle if their an infant or a young child in a car seat," Lewis said.
Chesterfield has an ordinance that prohibits parents from leaving young children alone in a car. The woman in question will only receive a possible fine, and a citation because the child was not harmed.
