(KMOV.com) - Alton police surprised sex offenders in their area with a spot check Wednesday.

“We start early before the news people get out, before people get out of bed were knocking on doors. We want to make sure regular sex offenders are home when we knock on doors. What better time than 6 or 7 in the morning,” said Chief Jason Simmons of the Alton Police Department.

News 4 watched officers go through trash cans, check mail and even talk to neighbors to make sure violators are giving their correct address. Police said they checked on all 120 sex offenders in Alton.

“If they’re not in compliance and they’re using a bad address and not in line with what their court ordered paper work says, we will complete paperwork and warrants will be issued for an arrest." '

Some offenders were arrested Wednesday.
