Metro East police accused of destroying evidence

(KMOV.com) – Federal, state, and local authorities are investigating after evidence collected by the Alton Police Department was allegedly destroyed.

The Illinois States Attorney said the missing evidence could affect around 130 cases. The lawyers of defendants who may been affected have been notified.

Alton Mayor Brant Walker said he is extremely distressed and angry after someone who works for Alton police allegedly destroyed the evidence. Walker said the person who is believed to be involved has been put on leave. The city is investigating.

Alton authorities said they are cooperating with federal and state investigators and also said they will be transparent during the investigation.

Authorities said they are unsure how much evidence was destroyed.
