WOOD RIVER, Illinois – A Metro East man is in custody after he allegedly stole a pickup truck Tuesday morning, then parked it outside a local police stations to pick up a weekend theft report.

Charles Jones, 26, was charged with one count of motor vehicle theft after police say stole the truck outside a Wood River business.

Police said man called authorities about 8:30 a.m. and reported his truck stolen.

According to authorities, Jones pulled up to the police station about 40 minutes later and asked to get a copy of a weekend theft report for a theft of medication.

By that time, police said they noticed the truck, which had magnetic signs for a home restoration business, matched the description of the vehicle reported stolen earlier.

When police asked Jones why he was driving a stolen vehicle, he told officers he was told he could drive it because it would be good advertisement for the business.

Jones was in custody Tuesday at the Madison County Jail in Edwardsville. His bond was set at $60,000.
