(KMOV.com) -  A Metro East man is behind bars, accused of beating his 6-year-old stepson with a belt and curtain rod.

Authorities said Jessie Garcia, of Godfrey, beat the boy because the young child got in trouble on the school bus. Garcia has been charged with aggravated battery of a child.

"It's simply uncalled for," said Madison County Sheriff Bob Hertz.  'It really makes no difference to me what a 6 year-old child would do. I can't think of any plausible reason why a 6 year-old child would be disciplined in this fashion".

Hertz said the victim's teacher noticed the boy was bruised and called authorities.

Garcia lives on Vollmer Lane, where several other children were seen Tuesday at his home, but Hertz said he doesn't have reason to believe right now any other children were harmed by Garcia.

Garcia's father does not believe his son has done anything wrong.

"There's a long story behind all of this," said Ben Garcia.

Authorities said the victim has been placed in state custody.

The investigation is open and active.
