(KMOV) – A man is in custody after police say he attempted to abduct a girl from her Wentzville home on Sunday.

Police say John Perry, 20, allegedly grabbed a 7-year-old girl off the front porch of her home on Marshall Drive and ran toward his home on Hockman Drive shortly at approximately 12:35 p.m.

According to the report, a woman, identified as the victim’s mother, and a neighbor began chasing after Perry as he held the girl by the neck as he ran.

Police say Perry then threw the girl to the ground moments later and continued to flee.

Wentzville authorities were able to take him into police custody shortly after their arrival.

"The neighbors did exactly the right thing and they didn't let any time go by before they acted on it, constantly be on the lookout," Tim Lohmar, St. Charles Prosecuting Attorney said.

Perry told officers on scene that a voice told him he “needed to hurt someone and she was the first one he saw.” He also stated he knew what he was doing was wrong but could not explain why he did it.

The female victim suffered only minor injuries and is expected to be okay.

Other than the pending domestic assault charge, John Perry was charged with felony child kidnapping and a $200,000 cash-only bond was set.
