(KMOV)—A former University of Wisconsin football player from the metro-east was shot several times in East St. Louis Saturday, according to police.

It happened in the 1800 block of Russell around 2 a.m.

Police say the Kraig Appleton, 21, is listed in stable condition.

Appleton was a wide receiver for the team. He was an honor roll student in East St. Louis, as well as an all-state receiver and all-state hurdler in track. Appleton graduated from high school in 2009.

He was suspended from the University of Wisconsin football team his freshman year, left school, and did not return.
