ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Police are issuing another reminder for users of craigslist to be aware of traps.
Tuesday a man who arranged to buy an iPhone thought he was being careful, but despite his precautions, he was robbed at knifepoint outside a busy shopping center.
The victim fell prey to Kerron Cowan,26, who placed a fake craigslist ad and agreed to meet the buyer in a location of his choosing. The victim chose the parking lot of the St. Louis Galleria.
According to court documents, Cowan met the victim at his car, displayed a knife, and robbed him of $900.
St. Louis County police say most people who use craigslist know the basics, but they may not always help. Even picking a well-lit place with heavy traffic didn’t help the victim in this case.
Police caution to always bring a friend along and even suggest contacting a police station to use their lobby or parking lot to make a transaction.
