TROY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A man is in custody after allegedly locking himself in a room with a 3-year-old boy and a shotgun after having a verbal dispute with the boy’s mother.
According to police, Brandon Emory Zumwalt and the boy’s mother were engaged in a verbal dispute when he grabbed the boy, a shotgun and locked the door to a bedroom. The boy’s mother told police Zumwalt also threatened to shoot her and her aunt.
Police say deputies attempted to talk Zumwalt out of the bedroom but he refused by yelling loudly at the deputies and talking strangely. Deputies said they heard a skin on skin “smack” from within the bedroom followed by loud screaming and crying from the child. Deputies said they then kicked open the bedroom door and quickly removed the child from the bedroom.
According to police, Zumwalt violently fought with deputies until they could get him under control and into custody. Police say they removed the shotgun from the room and learned it was loaded and chambered, along with 45 additional rounds.
The 3-year-old was returned to his mother in good health.
Zumwalt is being charged with Felonious Restraint, First Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Unlawful use of a Weapon, Third Degree Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Resisting Arrest. He is currently being held at the Lincoln County Jail under a $25,000 cash only bond.
