VALLEY PARK, Mo. (KMOV.com) - Police say a man stole a woman's car and crashed it after claiming he needed help.
Police say a Valley Park woman offered a ride to 34-year-old Michael A. Null, Jr., who was walking with a walker and his female companion on Nov. 11. According to authorities, Null's companion told the woman Null's walker was bent. The woman then offered the two a ride to her home where she said she had a walker that was in good shape.
The woman proceeded to drive Null and his companion back to her home. Police say when she went inside to get the walker, she left her 2009 Ford Escape running with the keys in the ignition. Null then jumped in the front seat and drove off.
Police say Null weaved in and out of traffic and exceeded the speed limit. Null eventually hit another car, a 2002 Ford Explorer at the intersection of Highway 141 and Hawkins Road. The drive of the other car hit his head on the steering wheel and was hospitalized at St. Anthony's Medical Center.
Null ran on foot from the scene but was soon caught. Null is charged with stealing a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, and second degree assault. Null was charged with second degree assault because of the injuries suffered by the other driver in accident. He is currently being held in the St. Louis County Jail on $25,000 bond.
