(KMOV.com) – Police have charged an East St. Louis man in connection with a car theft that ended in an assault March 7.

Police say Demarco McCaster, 28, stole a victim’s vehicle from a Maplewood Commons parking lot. The victim chased after the truck and jumped in the bed, attempting to stop the theft.

According to police, McCaster fled down Highway 40, eventually pulling over and squaring off with the victim on the side of the highway.

After the fight, McCaster drove off.

An investigation led police to McCaster after he was held in the St. Clair County Jail on unrelated charges. Tuesday, he was charged with robbery and armed criminal action.

The victim’s 1992 GMC Sierra has not been recovered.
