EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A man has been charged in the stabbing death of an 18-year-old man in East St. Louis Monday morning.
Rodney Lewis was charged with first-degree murder.
According to Chief Floore, East St. Louis officers responded to the 800 block of North 80th Street around 2 a.m. after receiving a call for a person down.
When officers arrived, they found Michael Barton, 18, had suffered multiple stab wounds. Barton was transported to Belleville Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to authorities, the Lewis left the scene shortly after the stabbing, but returned later with a shotgun. Police say he intended to hurt the family members of the victim who witnessed the stabbing.
Lewis was taken into custody, where he remains on a $1 million bond.
Barton’s death was the fourth homicide in the city over a 36-hour span.
Three people were fatally shot outside Club VIP on Sunday. The suspects involved in that shooting have not yet been caught.
In reaction the recent rash of violence, East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks on Wednesday issued a city-wide lockdown for all residents under 17 years old.
