(KMOV) – Police said a man was found dead in a Fairview Heights hotel room Wednesday morning, less than a day after his father’s body was found inside a Swansea home.

Police said the body of 36-year-old Jarad Daughtrey was found inside a room at the Trailway Lodge, located at 10039 Lincoln Trail.

His father, 61-year-old David Daughtrey, was found inside a house in the 200 block of Mimosa Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the retired Illinois State Police trooper's body was discovered after police responded to a wellness check at the home he shared with his son.

Authorities said officers saw something at the scene that made them activate the Major Case Squad.

Officers initially named Jarad Daughtrey as a person of interest in the case after he stole his father’s black Chrysler Town and Country van, which had military-handicapped tags.

Authorities said they received a tip Jarad Daughtry was staying at the hotel and later found him and the stolen vehicle after responding to the scene.

Police said they made brief contact with Jarad Daughtry while he was in the hotel room, but he topped communicating. They broke their way into the room and found him dead.

Police told News 4 the van was towed away from the scene and autopsies on both men were scheduled for later Wednesday.

Officials said Jarad Daughtrey had recently made comments about committing suicide before his father's death. According to St. Clair County Court records, he was convicted of domestic battery in 2012.
