(KMOV) – A former UPS worker was charged with stealing from packages and selling the goods on the street.

Police say Justin Kemp, 20, was a package handler for the Earth City UPS location. He admitted to stealing $9,000 worth of mobile phones and accessories straight out of customer’s packages.

Corporate officials with UPS said Kemp, a part-time employee was terminated following these allegations.

St. Louis County Police say between August and October, Kemp admitted to stealing 16 mobile phones and sold them on the streets for $150 per phone.

The company calls the case extremely rare. News 4’s Jasmine Huda asked UPS how they plan to ensure employees don’t tamper with packages.

Corporate officials responded with a list of delivery tips for customers.

Police say that some of these thefts were caught on security videos.
