BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A judge in southwestern Illinois has sentenced a 25-year-old man to more than a half century in prison in the 2009 slaying of a Centerville police officer.
Lemuel Houston was sentenced to 53 years on Tuesday in St. Clair County.
Houston in July pleaded guilty but mentally ill in the shooting death of Lt. Greg Jonas. That type of plea asserts that at the time of a crime, a defendant was suffering from a mental illness but wasn’t insane. He’s therefore considered responsible for his actions.
Authorities say Jonas was shot in the head and neck outside a public housing complex. His body was found on the street near his police cruiser.
Houston will be required to serve his entire sentence.
