HAZELWOOD, Mo (KMOV.com) – A Hazelwood mother has been charged in the drowning death of her infant son who was left in the bathtub with the water running.
Brooke Maynard, 24, was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
Police said Maynard, who was staying at the Extended Stay Hotel in the 6000 block of North Lindbergh Avenue for the last three months, got distracted and left her 9-month-old son unattended in the bath tub with the water running.
After realizing what she had done, Maynard went back into the bathroom finding the child, later identified as Roman Bell, not breathing in the tub full of water.
She removed her son from the tub and began giving him CRR as she dialed 911.
When police arrived, they found the Bell on the floor in the room with his mother as she was administering CPR.
Bell was taken to DePaul Hospital Emergency Room, but emergency workers were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the hospital just after 3 p.m.
Maynard was taken to the St. Louis County Jail, where she remains on a $250,000 bond.
