(KMOV) -- A Granite City man is being held at the Madison County Jail on felony weapons charges, along with other charges of domestic battery and unlawful possession of firearms.

Police say Jess Reed, 48, had a domestic dispute with his girlfriend at his home Tuesday evening. When police arrived at Reed's residence on Orville, they determined that he was arguing with his girlfriend who also lives with him. Officers then say Reed's girlfriend's son tried to get him to go outside when Reed hit his girlfriend's son. The son then allegedly hit Reed in self defense.

Police also report finding Reed's sawed off shotgun. The shotgun's barrel was shorter than the legal length. The possession of the weapon in that manner is a felony. Reed also does not have a Firearm Owner's Identification Card through the state of Illinois.

Jess Reed was treated and released from an area hospital before being taken to the Madison County Jail where his bond was set at $25,000.
