DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) - Former DeKalb County police officer Jeremy Reynolds will take the witness stand Thursday in his own defense.
Opening statements in Reynolds’ trial got underway Tuesday. DeKalb County Prosecutor Leif Howard told jurors Reynolds abused his power as a police officer in the worst way.
“Under the threat of jail, he ordered two young women to do a sexual act. One said yes, the other said no,” said Howard.
Reynolds was an officer for DeKalb County for three years.
According to prosecutors, on Sept. 15, 2009, Reynolds was working the nightshift when he stopped a woman who was a known prostitute.
The woman told Reynolds she had a small bag of marijuana on her. The station will not reveal either woman’s identity because they are alleged sexual assault victims.
The first victim who testified cried when she told jurors about her encounter with Reynolds. The woman said Reynolds threatened to take her to jail unless she performed oral sex on him.
Fearing for her life, the woman said she did it.
“I couldn’t believe that the DeKalb County police was getting me to do this even though I was on drugs or whatever. I couldn’t understand how he could violate me like that,” said the woman.
Reynolds’ attorney Jackie Patterson told jurors Reynolds admits the woman performed oral sex on him, but according to Reynolds, it was consensual.
“She voluntarily complied and did that. At no time did Reynolds ever tell her, ‘If you don’t give me oral sex I will arrest you.’ In fact, she didn’t have any marijuana on her,” said Patterson.
Reynolds is also accused of making a similar proposition with a 20-year-old married woman with children.
He stopped her for speeding on Jan, 22, 2010. According to prosecutors, the woman had an outstanding warrant for probation violation.
Prosecutors said Reynolds handcuffed the woman and put her in the back of his patrol unit that when he told her to show him her breasts or he will take her to jail.
The woman refused.
“This victim says, ‘No, I’d rather go to jail.’ She starts to cry because this is a police officer,” said Howard.
Patterson told jurors Reynolds did not make that proposition.
