ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- A former jail guard who worked in the St. Louis Justice Center has been convicted of forcing a female inmate to have sex with him in 2009.

Jurors is deliberating on the sentence for Tony West, 36. West who is from the 5300 block of St. Louis Avenue, was found guilty Thursday, after a two-day trial.

The 29-year-old inmate was in jail after writing bad checks. West had told her if she had sex with him, he could get her charges withdrawn.

The victim reported the incident after she was transferred to a jail in Cape Girardeau for another case.

According to Assistant Circuit Attorney Natalie Warner, West’s DNA was found on rubber gloves inside the janitor’s closet where the incident took place.

The victim is originally from St. Louis and can’t read or write. West’s attorney John Washington argued the victim was upset after being teased in jail and was possibly out for money, though the victim has not sought a civil case.

After the verdict came down, West’s lawyer called for leniency in his sentence. Family members were called to testify, including his wife, Angela.

Angela testified to the quality of her husband’s character, but said the couple had sometimes had sex in the same jail closet at the center of the case when she was an employee at the justice center.

West did plead guilty to sexual contact with a prisoner in 2011. He was promised a sentence of three years’ probation, but withdrew his plea after saying prosecutors told him he wouldn’t have to register as a sex offender.

West’s current offense is a felony.
