ST. LOUIS (AP) -- An East St. Louis woman has been found guilty of misdemeanor animal abuse for failing to properly care for a puppy that later was dragged behind a pickup truck.

After Thursday’s verdict, 41-year-old Benetta Johnson was sentenced to two years of probation and 150 hours of community service. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that she also was ordered to donate $250 to the Humane Society.

Authorities believe Johnson tried to return the 6-month-old dog, now dubbed Trooper, to her ex-husband. She says she told her 13-year-old son to put the dog in the bed of her former spouse’s truck, but the teen instead tied the puppy to the truck’s trailer hitch.

Johnson’s ex-husband didn’t see the dog and began driving down the interstate the next day. The dog survived.
