(KMOV.com) -- East St. Louis is in week two of the 40 days on non-violence campaign, but the non-violence streak was broken Saturday night when a teenager was shot and killed.

East St. Louis Police said Derundaerae Smith, 19, went out to a restaurant to pick up food for his grandmother when someone began firing shots. Smith tried to run, but police said he was shot in the back.

Authorities do not have any leads or suspects in this case, but city officials still hope that by reaching out to the community and better educating citizens, they’ll be able to cut down on crime altogether.

The second week of the 40 days of non-violence initiative focuses on health. The city will hold screenings and talk about health related issues.
