(KMOV) – Police say a man accused of stealing thousands in jewelry is in custody after a Creve Coeur woman spotted him inside her home.

According to police, the victim was returning to her home off Conway Gardens Rd. and Conway Gardens Ct. when she saw an unfamiliar car parked in the driveway.

Police say she entered the garage and heard her two dogs barking in the back of the house. That’s when she spotted the suspect coming out the back door holding a black backpack and wearing gloves.

Authorities say she tried confronting the man, but he ran past her, got into his car and drove away.

Town and Country police say they quickly located the car and the suspect got out. He attempted to flee but was chased down by police.

Police say they later found four watches and a large amount of jewelry valued at more than $50,000 inside the backpack.

The suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Justin Jefferson, later confessed to stealing the jewelry to support his heroin habit.
