(KMOV.com) -- A group of construction workers and witnesses helped police catch a robbery suspect near Belleville Thursday afternoon.

Workers at the Town and Country Liquor store in Belleville said a man walked in and grabbed a clerk from behind the counter.

Witnesses said 58-year-old Charles James allegedly held the clerk around her neck and said he was going to “blow her head off.”

Authorities reported James allegedly took cash and ran out of the store, but bystanders chased after him.

James then ran into a group of construction workers who held him up until police arrived.

“We need the public and we need the calls. We need the information,” said St. Clair County Sheriff Rick Watson, “And a lot of times we don’t like to involve people. If you would just give us the information, we’ll take it from there.”

James was charged with aggravated robbery Friday and is being held on a $125,000 bond.
