(KMOV) -- A search is underway for the suspects involved in an officer-involved shooting in St. Clair County Tuesday night.

Police say sometime before 8 p.m. a deputy responded to a call of a carjacking near the subdivision of Park Field Terrace near Route 157 and Clarita.

The officer reportedly spotted the vehicle matching the description and a short chase ensued.

According to Illinois State Police, two suspects got out of the vehicle following the pursuit and began firing at the deputy. He returned fire before the suspects fled on foot.

A short time later, police say a person went to a local hospital emergency room, suffering from a gunshot wound. It is still unclear if this person is connected to officer –involved shooting.

The St. Clair County Auto Theft Task Force is currently investigating the carjacking.

Authorities are searching the area for the suspects. Police believe they may have ran into a nearby apartment or housing complex.

The deputy involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave per department policy for officer-involved shootings.
