(KMOV) – Police said a serious car accident involving an off-duty police officer and her daughter led to a bystander robbing them minutes after the accident.

The three-car accident took place at Page and Taylor Tuesday afternoon. As the off-duty officer and her daughter were waiting for an ambulance, a 26-year-old woman pretended to offer help, then stole their mobile phone.

Witnesses told News 4 they were shocked by the theft.

"I guess people are facing hard times, but that doesn't give you the right to steal someone's cell phone, especially when they're waiting for an ambulance to pick them up," said Tommie Thompson.

Police said the woman was located down the street trying to sell the stolen phone. She was arrested at the scene.

Authorities said three children and two adults were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries after the wreck. The officer was also hospitalized and is expected to make a full recovery.
