(KMOV.com) -- Police say a St. Charles woman did the right thing when she reported stolen goods she found on her property.
According to court documents Laura Mahler found a wallet in her yard belonging to a victim who reported it stolen on February 9 following a burglary of her home. Police say Mahler returned the wallet and told the victim, and later police officers, that her son Steven may have been involved with the theft.
On February 12, police St. Charles Police stopped Steven Mahler for a traffic violation, and got consent to search his vehicle. Inside, they found a bag containing gift cards and store merchandise cards. The cards were reported stolen in the same February 9 burglary.
Police then went to the suspect’s home on February 12, and his mother gave police consent to search her home.
Police say in Steven’s bedroom, they found Rosary beads, and a wooden cross. Just outside the room they found a chest with three fleece blankets inside.
According to police, Laura Mahler said the blankets did not belong in the home.
The Rosary and blankets were reported stolen from on February 8 by the same victim.
The victim positively identified the Rosary, three blankets and the gift cards as all being taken in the burglary.
