ST. PETERS, Mo (KMOV.com) – A prisoner in St. Peters is behind bars for the second time after making a brief escape attempt Monday.
Zachary Mills, 21, of Wright City was allowed to make a phone call, and after the call the prisoner assaulted a corrections officer and grabbed his keys.
Mills was able to escape the facility and made it a short distance from the St. Peters Justice Center. He made it outside the center and ran to a nearby apartment complex. An officer caught up to him and pointed a taser, at which points Mills surrendered.
According to authorities, Mills was never out of sight from corrections officers.
Mills was charged Oct. 31 with assaulting a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. Bail for those charges was set at $5,000.
He told police he was homeless, but planned to move back into his mother’s house, claiming he was trying to break his heroin addiction.
