(KMOV.com) -- Police have a bank robbery suspect in custody in north St. Louis County. All thanks to an off duty Pine Lawn Police officer.

According to reports, multiple police departments responded to a bank robbery around 9:00 a.m. December 7 at the U.S. Bank in the 3800 block of Lucas and Hunt. Police say the suspect walked into the bank unarmed and demanded money from the teller. The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect, then, left the U.S. Bank and walked to nearby Simmons First National Bank in the 7100 block of Natural Bridge, which is less than a mile from the U.S. Bank. At Simmons First National, the suspect, again, was given an unknown amount of money.

Police say, when the suspect was running from Simmons First National, an off duty Pine Lawn officer spotted him. The officer tracked the suspect down, tackled him and made the arrest.

Police warn that this type of arrest is not common as it can be very dangerous. Pine Lawn, however, plans to honor the off-duty officer for his heroic actions.

Both robberies are being handled as separate incidents by the Normandy and Northwoods police departments.

Investigations are ongoing.
