(KMOV.com) - Deputies in St. Clair County are warning residents about a phone scam.

Authorities said someone is calling people at random to say they are wanted by the Sheriff’s Department. If the person does not pay their bond over the phone, the scammer alleges they will be arrested.

Sheriff Richard Watson said deputies would never call a person to ask for money.

“I want people to know we are not making these phone calls,” Watson said. “This has been happening over the past two or three weeks. We get multiple phone calls per day. People try to call back the number and the phone company says it is not an active number.”

This case is similar to one in St. Louis City. Investigators in both cases said the scammer identifies themselves as the IRS.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
