Vehicle break-in suspect in custody after foot chase in Metro East

Bethalto, Ill. (KMOV) – A vehicle break-in suspect is in custody after a foot chase in the Metro East early Tuesday morning.

According to police, a man witnessed the suspect breaking into cars on Rhondell in East Alton around 5:36 a.m. and called police. The witness told police he tried to chase the suspect down but the suspect got away.

Deputies responded to the scene a few minutes later and began a chase but the suspect escaped.

The Madison County Sheriff, Wood River Police Department, Bethalto Police Department and Illinois State Police set up a perimeter and waited for a K-9 Unit to arrive.

Police said the K-9 Unit found the suspect around 6:42 a.m. in a wooded area.

The 19-year-old suspect was treated for minor injuries, including a puncture wound from the dog.
