ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Two men have been charged with murder for their role in an alleged home invasion, officer-involved shooting death of Brandon Jones.
Police have charged Roderick Mcallister, 20, and Derez Austell, 19, with second-degree murder, second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, first-degree burglary and multiple counts of armed criminal action after allegedly assisting Jones in a home invasion.
Police say officers were called to the scene after Jones, 23, and fellow accomplices Mcallister and Austell and reportedly broke into a home on the 6200 block of Famous Avenue.
A witness called police when he saw three men kick in the back door of the home.
When officers arrived, Jones shot at the officers. The officers returned fire, killing Jones.
Three of the four suspects sped away and led police on a chase. Police said the suspects jumped out of their car and ran into thick weeds and brush along railroad tracks by Manchester between Tamm and Knox.
Police dispatched a helicopter to get a better view. Officers started scaling fences and climbing through railroad cars and into the weeds to search for the suspects.
One of the suspects was pulled out of the weeds and loaded into a police car around 1:35 p.m. A second suspect was later found, handcuffed and hauled away.
An officer responding to the original scene was hit by a car at Manchester and Tamm. The impact caused the car to flip over and land on its roof.
Police tell News 4 the suspects and the victim did not know each other, but the suspects got some bad information that the victim may have had drugs and money.They found neither inside the house.
Police are still searching for the female getaway driver.
The investigation into the home invasion and shooting is ongoing.
