(KMOV) -- The only survivor of a shootout that left two dead is in jail, and has been charged with killing a former Pagedale police chief over the weekend.
Billy Cushshon Bey has been charged with four felony counts, and is being held on $1 million bond.
Officers say Cushshon Bey did not act alone, but the former police chief killed the other suspect as he tried to defend himself.
Police say Cushshon Bey was wounded by a gunshot during the attempted robbery on Saturday in the 12000 block of Jerries Lane in Black Jack.
Investigators believe Thompson used his own gun to defend himself, wounding Cushshon Bey and killing 18-year-old Jakeem Hicks.
Cushshon Bey is not only charged with the death of Thompson, but also that of his accomplice. This is because they happened during the commission of a felony.
St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch says that gambling led to the robbery. “Cushshon-Bey and his accomplice had been involved in a dice game, shortly before that and lost all their money,” he says. “Bey announced he was going to commit a robbery. Shortly after…Mr. Thompson was approached, they attempted to rob him and the shooting took place.”
Cushshon-Bey’s injuries are not life-threatening. He is being held in the county jail on $1 million bond.
