(KMOV.com) -- News 4 has revealed fraud and wasteful spending of a federal program giving away free cell phones.
According to US News and World Report, starting January 1, 2014, the state of Georgia will charge a monthly $5 fee for people using the FFC’s Lifeline program.
Advocacy groups are fighting the new policy calling it an attack on the poor.
The Lifeline program began in 1985. It provides low-income households with phone service. The percentage of homes using Lifeline has increased from 80 percent in 1985 to 92 percent in 2012.
Many wireless carriers have added prepaid subscribers to offset the costs of the federal program.
