ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- American Airline officials said thousands of the company’s employees could lose their jobs, with potential layoffs coming from Lambert Airport.

A spokesperson for the airline says some workers will be offered early retirement, others offered new positions in what the company’s calling a restructuring.

Company officials said 11,800 employees, 164 of them who work at Lambert, are expected to be affected by the move.

However, the airline anticipates having to lay off only 40 percent of them.

The restructuring will affect positions such as airport agents, fleet service clerks and mechanics.

Employees received letters warning them the lay-offs would happen in November or December.

News 4 contacted the spokesperson Lambert spokesman Jeff Lea, who said they have not been officially told anything.

However, American Airlines released a statement on Tuesday.

“Through restructuring, American Airlines has worked to lower our costs through sustainable, structural changes,” it read. “Unfortunately, it was clear from the beginning that this would involve job loss.”
