WATERLOO, Ill. (AP) -- Friends of Sheri Coleman testified a crumbling marriage and physical abuse took a toll on the young wife in her final months.
Kathy LaPlante and the others talked Friday about their friendship with the murder victim. LaPlante said the Coleman's were having marital problems in late 2008, when Chris Coleman allegedly began an affair.
Coleman, a bodyguard for a Missouri-based televangelist, has pleaded not guilty to the May 2009 killings of his wife and their sons, who were 11 and 9.
Prosecutors contend Coleman strangled his family to further an affair with his girlfriend and to avoid losing his job, which had a no-divorce policy.
Under questioning by a defense attorney, LaPlante said Chris Coleman wanted time off in 2008 to renew his wedding vows, adding Joyce Meyer Ministries refused.
