(KMOV) --- Circuit Judge Milton Wharton denied the request by the lawyers for accused triple murderer Chris Coleman to delay the start of his trial so jury selection will begin as scheduled on February 15th.
The judge also decided to have two juries, one for a death penalty case and an alternate one ready to go in case the law changes right before or during the trial.
The defense requested to delay the start of the trial until at least March 12, which is the deadline for Governor Pat Quinn to decide whether to abolish the death penalty in Illinois. The governor has not indicated what he will do.
The prosecution is seeking the death penalty against Coleman for the May 2009 murders of his wife, Sheri, and the couple's two sons. The murders happened at the Coleman home in Columbia, Illinois.
