LAS VEGAS (AP) — It's said that video killed the radio star — at least in the popular song from the 1980s.
Perhaps if there were such a song today, it would lament that smartphones killed off cameras, camcorders and GPS units.
A research firm says sales of consumer electronics fell nearly 6 percent during the holiday season.
The reason: sales of smartphones were cannibalizing sales of standalone gadgets like cameras, camcorders and GPS systems.
For example, camcorder sales dropped 43 percent, sales of digital picture frames are off 38 percent — and sales of GPS units fell off 33 percent.
