NEW YORK (AP) — Friends and supporters of Aaron Swartz are planning to pay tribute to the free-information activist and online prodigy, who killed himself last week as he faced trial on hacking charges.
A memorial gathering is set for Saturday afternoon in New York City. Swartz was found dead Jan. 11 in his apartment.
The 26-year-old Swartz was a teenager when he helped create RSS, a technology for gathering updates from blogs, news sites and elsewhere on the Web. He later co-founded the social news site Reddit.
Federal prosecutors charged him with using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's computer network to obtain millions of academic articles. He planned to make them available for free.
He had pleaded not guilty. His family, admirers and some legal experts have blasted the case as overreaching.
