Organization sees importance in taking care of elderly, disabled

08:07 PM CDT on Sunday, July 22, 2007

(KMOV) - News 4 Angel's introduces a group of people who see the importance of taking care of some of St. Louis' most treasured citizens.

News 4 Angels is a community outreach effort of KMOV-TV that focuses on charities making a difference in our community.

The volunteer organization called, Rebuilding Together recently helped an elderly woman with her yard work.

The clean-up is just one of many projects on the agenda of the organization.

Executive Director of Rebuilding Together, Lynne Rajani says, "We repair homes for the low income home owners particularly the elderly and the disabled."

Rajani says all projects are designed to be done in one eight-hour day with a swarm of 15-30 people.

The goal is to keep people in their homes as long as they can.

"If we can put a ramp in then they can get in or out. Otherwise they might have to go to a retirement home or nursing home," Rajani says.

Volunteers cut back overgrown bushes, trimmed dead limbs from over half a dozen trees and removed a retaining wall that was falling for the elderly woman.

They also painted fencing around the entire yard.

Their main focus was the extreme overgrowth of bushes and trees, which can be a huge safety issue and make the woman’s home more susceptible to burglary.

"One of the neat things about this is it's a great place for companies and corporations and churches to do a really neat team project by working on a house like this," Rajani says.
