Nine year-old girl saves family from house fire in Jefferson County
10:15 PM CDT on Friday, April 25, 2008
St. Louis (KMOV) – A 9-year-old girl in Jefferson County, Jordan Gross, is being credited with saving her family from a house fire.
Jordan Gross was ready for this. Even as the fire broke out in her home, she had a plan.
As flames raced through the roof of the girl’s home along the 300 block of Washington in Arnold, Jordan gross remembered what firefighters taught her in school and she got everyone out and called for help.
Everyone was asleep when the fire started in the roof of the house. The smoke was building in the attic, above the working smoke alarms and undetected to everyone, except Jordan.
Jordan said she saw sparks coming from the light so she went to get mother. They then grabbed Jordan’s 8-year-old brother and went outside.
Jordan's brother, who has autism, is OK, along with her mother and an uncle.
She did everything by the book according to the man who taught her about fire safety six months ago in school.
How the fire started is still a mystery fire officials are trying to unravel. What is clear to them is they hope little Jordan’s quick actions will help other families begin to think about how to escape an unthinkable situation in their homes.
