More money allocated for ridding St. Louis of graffiti
12:57 PM CDT on Tuesday, April 8, 2008
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- More money is on the way to help fight a growing problem in St. Louis -- graffiti.
One of the more high-profile incidents happened last year as the new Tamm Avenue overpass was being built near the zoo.
So-called "taggers" struck the brand new walls and support columns before the bridge was complete.
That incident and others like it prompted 13th Ward Alderman Fred Wessels to allocate an additional $30,000 for Operation Brightside. The group works year round to eliminate the most visible and offensive artwork.
Operation Brightside hopes to eliminate at least 5,000 illegal "tags" in 2008.
